Deep in the heart of the South Pacific lies a remote tropical paradise where the team from Exploring Alternatives has made their home. Living completely off the grid on the island of OPI in the Solomon Islands, they have embraced a life surrounded by the stunning marine ecosystem and the challenges of self-sufficiency. Spearfishing for lunch, enjoying the simplicity of island living with coconuts, and witnessing majestic marine life like blue whales are all part of their daily routine. The thrill of unexpected encounters with dolphins or pilot whales adds an element of excitement to their isolated existence on the edge of the Earth.

Their journey to this unique lifestyle began with the team's parents, who fell in love with the island in the '80s and built it into the haven it is today. For over a decade, the team has called this remote paradise home, raising their family and running a scuba diving resort that offers others a glimpse into this extraordinary world. From living in a humble leaf house to constructing their dream family home using local materials, they have overcome the challenges of building in such a rugged terrain, where everything must be crafted from scratch.

Power generation on the island is currently reliant on diesel, but plans are in place to transition to a large solar system, a move that signals a significant shift towards sustainability. Water collection, purification, and storage are all managed in-house, with a keen focus on self-reliance in every aspect of their lives. Sourcing food from the Lagoon and maintaining a hydroponic garden for fresh produce, they have created a self-sustaining ecosystem that supports both their family and the local community. Despite the isolation and occasional challenges, the team's unwavering spirit and determination shine through as they continue to thrive in their island paradise.
