On the Greek island of Srios, Kirsten Dirksen embarks on an adventure to uncover the rugged beauty and secluded charm of a place where time seems to have stood still. With 36 villages scattered across its mere 29 square miles, Srios boasts a population of just 1,200 residents, predominantly seniors. Kirsten's exploration leads her to the ancestral home of her friend Giannis, a relic of the island's mining past. The traditional house exudes history with its old marble sinks and uniquely crafted beds, offering a glimpse into a bygone era.
Delving into the island's mining legacy, Kirsten uncovers a once-thriving industry that peaked in 1912, drawing over 2,000 miners to its rocky shores. However, the decline of mining in 1963, driven by cheaper mineral sources in Africa, left the town of Mega Levat a shadow of its former self. Today, only a handful of inhabitants remain, with poignant reminders of the past in prehistoric ruins and a memorial statue honoring the toil of the miners. Kirsten learns of the perilous conditions faced by the workers, including tunnel collapses and strikes for better treatment.
Giannis shares tales of his grandfather, who toiled in the mines while also earning a living as a fisherman, epitomizing the island's resilient spirit. As Kirsten immerses herself in the traditional house, she marvels at the ingenious storage solutions and savors homemade tea sourced from the island. The island's stark landscape, devoid of trees but offering unobstructed vistas, captivates Kirsten, who finds solace in the soothing sounds of the sea. Amidst the tranquility, she discovers a monastery with a solitary resident preparing for Easter, a poignant symbol of resilience in the face of change.
